I have a Back Track trailer for a 19' boat. While replacing the tires I noticed that the inside (backside) of the rims are covered with grease.

It seems that the hubs have been slinging grease while going down the road. The trailer has buddy bearings and I bought it used (2000 model) so I am not sure if this is from the previous owner putting too much grease in or if this is another problem such as seals or something.

What do you all think?

Thanks!

Re: Slinging grease

IF grease is getting OUT then water is getting IN even if in tiny amounts

I would take it apart and check everything and if good repack the bearings and replace the seals and pay carefull attention to the seal area

You need to get everything very clean and look carefully any theing like this means its bad

Re: Slinging grease

In my opinion, any 6 year old used trailer with unknown history needs a hub disassembly, bearing/race inspection, and repack/replace parts as needed. At a minimum you'll need new inner seals (#6 in the diagram provided above) to do this (maybe $15 for the pair)....which will likely be all that is necessary to buy to solve your problem.

While the wheels are off, use a degreaser and some paper towels to clean off all the spewed grease, then you'll have a baseline to assess any future problem or incorrect assembly.

Re: Slinging grease

Thanks for your comments!

I had already planned to take it apart and do the proper maintenance as it has always been a yearly thing for me to do on any of my trailers. I know the guy I bought it from and have even helped him do maintenance on it. I have no doubt that the bearings have been properly maintained in the past. I was just curious as to what causes this.

I'm not that familiar with buddy bearings and am not sure just how much grease you are supposed to put in them. From what the guy told me I think he has been putting too much in. I guess there is such a thing as too much and I suppose that if you do put too much grease in then it will come out somewhere. Probably from the back.

Thanks again!

Re: Slinging grease

push in on the pressure plate with your finger...if it gives a little then it doesn't need grease...if it doesn't move, pump in just enough to make it move. You're right - fill 'em too full it blows out the rear seal.

While ya got 'em off, make sure the spindle is shiny clean up on the shoulder where the seal rides - any pitting or discoloration will prevent a good seal - buff it out with emory cloth.
