Slight Vibration on Left or Right Turns

I understand this is a common theme in these forums. However, is there an appropriate post for this condition?

The boat runs great going forward. However, when I turn left or right, I feel a slight vibration.

Is this the gimbal bearing or universal joints or both? I will certainly find out when I pull the drive, but am curious and would like to prepare my thoughts.

I'm going to say it's probably the bearing, and bearings usually don't go bad unless they get wet. You could have a leak in the U-joint bellows (I hate that job) which toasted your bearing. But, if your not seeing any abnormal water in the bilge (water will eventually go through the bearing if the bellows is leaking) maybe you're lucky and the U-joints are dry (need lube). Good luck!

No abnormal water in bilge, but expect to address both. Sooner than later if the vibration worsens.

Understood on the cost.

Can I check the condition just by pulling the upper and lower gear housing off or is there more involved?

when you pull the drive and move the u-joints by hand, you will think that they are good as they will move smoothly. but underneath the caps, the surfaces are being worn by the needle rollers. the vibration will get worse as run time is gained. search this forum for more info on u-joint replacement.
