I have been thinking about adding a can of slick 50 to my engine oil, I am running a mercurser 190 stern drive with newly rebuilt heads ( 50 hours on the meter). I run my truck with slick 50 and she still performs great 5 years later, whats the advantage or disadvantage of using an additive and what do you guys recommend.?

Hey Russellk,
IMHO...won't help & won't hurt. Regular maintenance using standard premium products is all that's required. :)
Backlash

Re: slick 50 and other additives

sorry guys.......

I hate to say this, but.....it can hurt. The residue of burnt teflon can build up around ring land areas, causing seizures and actually break the top ring land off. I've seen several displays of this phenomina.....

This is some of the most interesting reading I've done to date...

Click Me

Hey Schematic,
Never heard of burnt teflon residue building up before.......by the way, that was an interesting article you linked to. I guess I should change my opinion to "won't help & may hurt". :D
Backlash

Interesting article. Confirms what a lot of people have said for years.

I came across an article lately about a fuel additive that was real interesting. I don't have the "click here" magic schematic has but if ya'll would like to read the article and if senor schematic is agreeable, I will email it to him and he can do his magic and all can read the article.

Let me know.

c/6

hooty

Russellk,
I agree with Backlash and the others. Just regular care + maintaince is the best for the engine. (IMHO) Most (if not all) additives of that nature are "snake oils" or AT BEST for every benifit there is a drawback also. Just buy the best dino oil for your rig and spend the slick 50 money on beer or fuel.

If any additive was that good-the manufactures would REQUIRE it. Remember, they have to warrant their product. Try to get Slick 50 to buy you a new engine.
