i have a 87 sea ray with the 3.0 and when i put it in gear fwrd or bckward it slams really hard. is the idle to high it is a little over 500 it comes out of gear fine
Its hard to say what you consider "hard". Some drives always seem to clunk into gear. If you have a stainless steel prop, it will be even harder.

What make is your drive?
On a 3.0L, you would be lucky if it stayed running at that rpm when in gear. Might want to get a shop tach and verify the actual engine rpm. They do not SLAM into gear at 600, let alone 500.
fellow boater had similar problem...check kill switch at base of shift cable on top of engine (small red and black micro switch) it shuts down engine momentarily when shifting his was stuck closed good luck Tim

That switch has nothing what-so-ever to do with it slamming into gear, and is not used when going into gear.
