Skinny, I've got a 02 bf50 and mechanically, it is fine. Both my son and I use it and we both feel that it has gotten louder the last 2-3 times we used it. Dealer found no problem and we are still probably 6 weeks from getting out again to listen. Any insight? It is on a 16 ft aluminum Lund. Thanks Granpa

Hi Grandpafish

Hard to tell from here, and I am not familiar with Honda. However the gasket between powerhead and mid section would be an object to check. If it started leaking there, will give the symptoms you have. Get someone elses opinion to.

If you can explain what you mean by louder.
Ticking? Knocking? Buzzing? Growling? Screeching or scrapeing? Is there any vibration associated with it? Is it more prevelant cold or hot? Does it come and go? Is it worse at a certain RPM?

Try to be more specific.

It seems to be louder at all speeds. No specific type of sound. Just closer to what you would expect from a 2 stroke. No noticeable vibration. Winter closed in on us just about the time we talked about it and agreed that it was louder so it is hard to be more specific. I'm sure that the dealer did not run it except in the tank and they could find no problem. I mentioned aluminum boat on the off chance that there could be a connection. In the short time that we both noticed it, it was a steady increase. No coming and going. Seemed to be louder from start to end of day.

You also do'nt mention if this is a tiller or a remote model. If this is the tiller are those thumb screws as tight as they need to be?If it is a remote, are those transom bolts still tight?Next time out ,pay real attention to the sounds you hear.Isolate them as best you can and give us a desrcription of those sounds.Keep in mind that sound travels much easier through cold autumn air than it doe's dense summer air.

Hello Hondon,
If by chance (a small one)if his exaust pipe was loose at the gasket or the gasket was going away, it looks like to me he'd be able to feel an exaust pulse at the oil change access cover?

Also as I found with my aluminum boat. The control cables from the remote to the engine were transmitting engine vibration and were making a racket. I secured them and isolated them with a little block of floatation foam.

One more thought, check the mounting and tightness of the silencer. This is a large black plastic housing that secures to the intake side of the tri-carbs.

Let us know what is ultimately found please.

Thanks for all the input. I absolutely will post a return on the outcome. Right now there is 16" of snow surrounding the boat and it is 25 degrees. This has been a bad winter, so when I will get out to run the boat is way up in the air right now. Thanks again. Granpa

That was cruel. Accurate, but cruel.
