ski selection question

I've got a son that is 15yo 6' and 140lbs, I'm 180 and I'm also 46yo. I skied when I was in my 20s and always used whatever the boat owner threw at me and told me to put on but now we have a boat that can pull a skier (well soon we are almost ready to take it to the lake) I would like to get a pair of skies that I guess are combos double or slalom that would be good for him to learn and me to get out there on also, just for the fun not really in to tricks but just enjoying the ride on a summer day. So tips on what I should be looking for would be helpful. Just a good stable in-expensive pair. Also one of the things that threw me off was the lengths didn't know how long we should be looking at.

Re: ski selection question

This is a great time of year to be looking at skis. A lot of the sporting goods stores are starting to clear inventory getting ready for fall already. I would look online and read reviews. You still won't know exactly what you need until you get on the water. While I was searching, most mid range combo skis were about $150. Some more others less. You may get lucky with the clearance sales though.

As far as length of ski, the length of the ski is based on the riders weight. The heavier the rider the longer the ski. There is an exception to that rule though. Skis that are wider in the front than normal will allow heavier riders to use a little shorter ski.

There is a chart that is available online that recommends ski sizes for each weight group.

I'd get a pair of 67" combos. They will work for anyone 200lbs and less for slalom and are good for combos as well. Check the site ski-it-again.com and you can find great deals on combos and slalom skis. I bought a 69" HO Triumph for less than $150 as well as some nice double-boot bindings for less than $75. The ski was one year old, the bindings were new; retail on that package would have been close to $500.

Thanks! I'm going to check out that site and you just made me think there are two places here in town that deal in used sports equipment, we don't have any lakes nearby but it can't hurt to give them a call.
