Ski Locker Cleaning

I'm a new owner of a 1999 Four Winns Horizon 190. The boat is in amazing shape for the year, but one thing I noticed is that the storage areas smell of gas/oil. Not really strong, but noticable. Is this normal? I plan on removing the carpets and giving them a good cleaning. But, there is a black residue at the drain of the ski locker that I'd like to clean. Does anyone know of the best way to clean this area and drain?
Thanks

Re: Ski Locker Cleaning

I have used bilge cleaners before that work great to clean up oily messes in bilges. Directions are on the bottle, but basically you pour it in making as big of a puddle as you need to reach all the areas you want to reach, leave it there for awhile (week or two?) and it will breakdown the mess and you can dip/drain out the messy fluid and towel out the remains. On an alum boat it leaves a nice clean, almost shiny surface. Go boating while it's in there. The sloshing around helps it to do it's job.

Oil and gas smells can be gotton out of carpets using the Castrol Purple stuff (or it's clones) or spray 9.

Smell of gas in the ski locker led me to a gas tank leak repair. Better check it out.

Good point, or it could be that the bilge just was dirty and the water level rose to the height of the bottom of the ski locker. I would think that a fuel leak would have strong fumes associated with it whereas a dirty bilge would just smell musty....mine didn't have any appreciable odor but it had things init including petroleum products to some extent.
