Re: ski-breeze sail boat

Hi,
My father, G?sta (Gus) Eriks?n, designed and built the SkiBreeze, starting the production in 1957 and continuing until around 1965. The hulls were hand-made in our factory at Scandia Boatyard, Uddevalla, Sweden, and probably among the first fiberglass hulls to be build in Sweden. We had one of the first boats in this series and tested it for sailing, motoring and waterskiing - my father's ambition was to have it multi-functional, but I always felt it was at it's best under sail. We used to win sailing races all the time with it thanks to it's ability to plane and because we could raise the centerboard and get through shallow passages where other boats couldn't go.
We have some original information about the boat, if you are interested, and even some old floorboards and some of the rigging details still in stock.
Regards,
Sara Eriks?n

I have a 1964 ski-breeze ski-30.
I was out on it off Seattle just yesterday, wind was amazing.

I'd love to hear more about those floor boards. Mine rotted out years ago, and I have some plywood in there now.

Re: ski-breeze sail boat

I have been sailing my SkiBreeze, Rune, for nearly 40 years! It sits on a shorestation in Lake Maxinkuckee just a short walk from my home in Culver IN. I sail it as often as possible. Shortly after I bought it from a fellow who had been sailing it on Lake Michigan, I wrote to Mr. Ericksen and received a nice reply that I still have (someplace). He mentioned getting his inspiration for the boat while watching twin ruddered craft in Hawaii on his honeymoom. He said he had some input from Rhodes, whos "Rhodes 19"" is very similar to the SkiBreeze. He mentioned the plant in Udevalla burning but saving the molds. Back in the late '60's he wrote that the boat was still a popular family camping boat with its two piece proctor mast that could be stored while under outboard power large enough to plane and ski behind. He said it was still used a lot in the fiords. He added that the boat was once "Yacht of the Month" in a popular boating magazine. (I'd sure like to find that article!) At the time of his reply he was attending his ill wife at a hospital in London as I remember. I have often looked on the web for other owners of this boat to no avail. I still sail with the original jib with the Udevalla sailmaker's mark. I have the original main, but now sail with a used "Fireball" main. It was wonderful to find these comments especially from Gus' daughter. My four children and now my grandchildren have all sailed in this wonderful boat. I feel blessed to have found his delightful boat nearly 40 years ago. It has been an important part of my life ever since.

Re: ski-breeze sail boat

Hey, I had one of those! Number 38 to be exact.

It had a plaque on the stern that said that it was built in 1959 in Sweden. I suspect it had all the original sails and hardware. I bought it in Vero Beach, Florida in 1992 [for $200 including British Seagull 5hp engine!], and sold it a few years later due to a job change.

This boat operated flawlessly! It was easy to sail, could accommodate 5 people with ease, and it was tough as nails. I can't remember anything ever breaking, though the centerboard was covered with barnacles and didn't want to retract all the way.

I sold it to a woman at the flight school that I was instructing at, and the following year a barge installing pilings for a dock at the house next to hers bumped into it and damaged the hull beyond repair. She sold it to a scrap yard~

:(

I have FOND memories of that boat and would pay thousands of dollars to find another one!

I also have a Ski Breeze that I bought in 1970 (?) and have sailed ever since. I have a nice letter from your father whom I wrote to shortly after I bought the boat. I'd love to share it with you.

Hi - My wife thought I needed a project  and purchased me a Sweden Ski Breeze (#5). Can someone tell me if I should undertake this project? What do you suppose the boat is worth?

Re: ski-breeze sail boat

Hey everyone,

I'm Sara's niece, and noticed she hasn't replied for a while, so I thought I'd give you an alternative contact for questions regarding the SkiBreeze.

The factory in Uddevalla did burn down, but Gus (my grandfather) kept building boats at his own place. I'll do some research into how many were built in total, and try to post it here before the summer's over! I can't imagine the boat with plywood, we'll see what we can do about that. There are some bits and pieces lying around, I'll inventory and get back to you.
Glad to hear they've all kept up so well, and are still being enjoyed.

You can send questions to TheSkiBreeze at gmail dot com (not spelling the email address out as I don't want spam, and there are programs that steal addresses off of websites)

All the best,

Katie
