SKI BARGE!?!?!? Anyone heard of them?

I have an option to buy a mid 1970s model Ski Barge, 14.5 ft, 40 HP Mariner, in good shape. I know nothing about these boats and would like input. Anyone ever heard of them? <br /><br />It is a center console bot, similar to a Carolina Skiff, but with a Semi-V front. He is asking $900 for the package. I think the motor was a 1980 model. Are these boats any good?<br /><br />Todd in TX

I have seen a couple of these around before.<br />If the motor checks out my opinion would be buy it for that price! Great little fishing boat!

I had one given to me, boat motor and trailer. It has a 40 rude, runs just having a hard time getting the shifter to find neutral- from the Capt. chair.<br />Looks like yours and from what I seelooking it over would pass the muster of a sound boat.

I have heard "ski barge" before, I thought it was a nickname or a term for a type of ski boat. From the photo it looks like a pretty good hull.<br /><br />As for the 'rude not finding neutral, try tightening the shifter shaft, it just threads into the actuator.

Bonedigger, Yeah I think they're called "Fishin'" Ski Barge, if I can remember correctly. My brother had one and turned it into a commercial fishing boat. He got probably got 5-6 years out of it after that.... He's pretty hard on things too. The hull's at my parents house in South Texas if you want another one .Serious though, It was a stout little boat. The one that you're looking at seems like it's been kept up pretty well.

Ski Barge... now that brings back memories.<br /><br />We had one when I worked for Dept of Fish and Game about 35 years ago... a 22' model I think, with a 70 hp Chrysler outboard (whew, that engne was a story in itself).<br /><br />It was very lightly built, with a low bow and not much freeboard so it would take on water pretty easily. <br /><br />Ours did have foam floatation in the floor so it was 'unsinkable'... which was a darn good thing as we swamped once with 6 people aboard. <br /><br />For protected waters.. should be ok as long is it's not cracking up. Check all the corners and wiggle everything.
