I have a couple questions about the skeg on my 76 Evinrude. 1st is what is the purpose of the skeg?
And second mine is broken, do they sell replacement skegs that I can have welded on? or should I just buy a skeggard?

Re: Skeg question

The main purpose of the skeg is to protect the prop. If running in shallow water, the skeg will take the hit before the prop. Yes, there are replacements that are available, but I'm not sure where. Just google it. I'm sure you'll find the info you need if someone else does not chime in.

A good marine repair shop should be able to repair your skeg. A skegguard is an alternative. I put one on my 83 Johnson about 3 years ago. Iv'e had no problems with it. Overtons sells the composite one and I believe Cabela's still sells a stainless one.

Re: Skeg question

I googled and found a couple diffrent ones that are for specific brand, year, hp but none for my year and I found 1 company that sells them for hp ratings not years or brand so I don't know how it will line up.

I'm a heavy truck mechanic and our welder is an artist with his welding rig so the labor cost is perfect---Free!

Thanks for your responses

Re: Skeg question

What engine do you have, Shadow? "76" doesn't tell us much.

I have used SkegGards on several engines, including one that wasn't broke. I did that because I was doing a lot of gunkholing on Lake Of The Woods, which is infamous for unmarked rocks. The SkegGards far outperformed the alloy skegs, taking many hits, gentle and hard, without damage.

You can buy them many places, but the right place to buy one is iboats.com
