Hello I have searched the forums but have not seen anything like this. I am looking at this boat has 1988 Yamaha with 85. Skeg is broken as seen in photo. Owner stated fluids are intact and boat does run fine with exhaust exiting the hole. Can this be welded? skeg.jpg

How can the fluids be intact when you can see inside? I think that is going to take more them simply welding a skeg on, but what do I know... :noidea:

Is this motor mounted on the boat, or a stand?

I wasn't sure what I was looking at until I super zoomed. That looks like a thread-on extension housing on the front of the bullet/torpedo. It looks like the prop shaft inside. Can you back away and take a pic of the entire motor?

Yes that can be welded.-----But dimensions may change during / after welding of aluminum.-----This might make future repairs harder to make.

Thanks for responses. I havnt looked at boat yet as its an hr away and didnt want to waste my time if it could not be welded. Owner used it as it is last seasone. I will make arrangements to see it this week.

See the wee key and the threaded nut to hold the bearing carrier ??----That would be the problem area.----It can be welded but any future repairs may require a replacement housing !!!

As mentioned it can repair and looks like the it hasn’t intruded into the oil cavity...but if you are repairing then getting a replacement skeg fin....worth me saying that you should get a real good welder or shop to do it, if you not decent yourself.
Ally welding is a tricky thing, but there is also the for an against argument around how it should be done. With or without oil in the gear case. Some say without for safety and fire prevention... I’m in the with oil camp so it has a fair cooling effect on the gear case and more crucially the bearings and gear. Just need to go easy. Tough one.

If the price is right buy it.-----Then look for a used lower unit or gearcase.
