Re: Sizing a trolling motor

Depends on what you want to do, Jon. For positioning and maneuvering in fairly smooth water, 40# should be enough. If you really want to troll, against a fresh breeze, it might need 60#.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Sizing a trolling motor

Jon, I have a 16' Crestliner fishhawk w/90hsp Johnson. Should be very similar size and weight to your boat. I installed a 55-thrust lb. bow mount Minn Kota. It has 5 speeds. I fish primarily on a local big lake where it can get breezy and big boat wave action. I typically use a speed range of 2 or 3. I use 4-5 more when moving to a new nearby location. At 5 the foot control his a little hard to control. Everyone told me to error on the side of more not less power. I think I made a good decision. I use a 9.9 Merc for extended trolling. Hope I have helped. Good Luck.
