8:07 am PST, 5 April 2005

A total of six Iraqis have been detained at various locations on or near the Mexican border by authorities, in actions not related to patrols by U.S. volunteers north of the border.

Mexican authorities say four Iraqis were arrested at the airport in the border town of Mexicali, in Baja Mexico across from Calexico, Calif. They arrived on a flight from Mexico City when officials discovered they had false Dutch passports.

"Once in custody they told authorities they intended to sneak into the United States," Abraham Sarabia, an attorney general spokesman in Baja California state, told The Associated Press. "They said they started their journey in Greece, traveled to Spain and then to Mexico City."

Two other Iraqis were detained in the same general region by Mexican soldiers. They were traveling on Greek passports, said officials.
