First of all, What a great forum I have done a lot of reading and have a lot of questions.

I have only sailed a mirror dinghy with my 14yr old daughter before so be gentle.

I am having to put my own mooring in my local lake (Lac Gurledan, Brittany, France) it is a man made lake which runs a hydro elec plant after a dam

The lake is very sheltered it is approx 20 Mtr deep where i have to put my mooring in, My boat is 7,500 Kg Approx 4.7 Mtr long

What weight ballast would I need to sink to put 8mm chain to a bouy for mooring my boat

Is there a formula or is it guess work

Thanks in advance

Re: Sinking a Mooring

so you have a 15.5 foot boat, that weighs 7 500 kilogram = 16 534.669 664 pound

what is this that is so heavy.

Re: Sinking a Mooring

Will the mooring become permanent? Can you leave it in the water all year round? This could have an impact on the weight and type of mooring.

A good size cememnt moring can be made by using a plastic container as a mold lined with plastic sheeting.

My opinion would be use an old 4 cylinder engine block that has been stripped and cleaned ....... run the chain through the cylinders.

If it is not a permanent mooring then absolutely go with concrete. 20 meters deep will require a diver to do maintenance if you ever replace the chain.

Re: Sinking a Mooring

Hi,
Thanks for the replies,
Yes it will be permanent. I have been for a walk around the edge of the lake and some moorings have a car tyre filled with concrete and I spoke to a man who was cleaning his boat (Well my daughter spoke (FRENCH)) and he said his 4 Mtr boat had a 20-25 Kilo tyre with cement

So I think an old engine block would be a safe bet.

I will let you know if I have a Man on a bicycle with onions chasing me because my boat has stopped the hydro plant

Thanks

David

Ayuh,...

1 thing to add,...
If you use 2 mooring blocks, chained together with a short chain,...
It'll Never move...
Even if the block closest to the boat is pulled by the wind pushing the boat,...
The 2nd block will never be tugged by the boat...

Pretty Cheap Insurance...
