I am in the process of owning my first boat ever an 01 20ft. bayliner trophy.I will be doing alot of towing w/a 2000 1500 Dodge Ram 4x4/5.9 litre, will a single axel w/surge brakes be enough. Also i think the engine may be too small for the boat a mrec. 125 o/b. Any imput on that would be much appreciated thanks for all your help. :D

Re: single or tandem axel trailer

I have a 23 ft aluminum boat (probably lighter than yours. My choice of a trailer was tandem axle. Here is why: Tracks better, backs much better (predictable, doesn't veer as much), but won't turn as quickly (a good/bad issue), and of most importance... if you get a flat, the rig is a lot more stable and oyu have better time to react. Additionally, a single axle trailer will have bigger wheels vice an equitable tandem and may require more water to launch. Also rollers allow a shallower launch than bunk boards. On brake: more is better. Get brakes on all wheels! This will ensure compliance in any state (rules vary greatly). I have tiedown stainless surge discs that I will be adding an electric over hydraulic control to go with a standard brake controller. More stoppage is always better. Your truck is fine for the pull, but you should have a good system on the trailer to help you stop. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

I think the HP is at a min. 150hp would be better. Go with the tandem.

Go with a tandem axle trailer so you have built in a margin of safety. Also the tires on a tandem axle trailer share the load over 4 reducing heat which kills tires. You spend a little more at the beginning but, it will pay off in the long haul.

Hope this helps..............

*******Don't worry******be happy***** :)
