Single handed anchoring

I am curious how some folks deal with deeper water anchoring single handedly. Running from the bow to the fish finder to spot the hole again or look for the marking buoy is just a pain. Besides installing a windlass, is there an easier way than just cleating off at the predetermined scope and hoping it all just "grabs" at the "right time"?

Re: Single handed anchoring

I don't have any "tricks" to give you other than how I do it...

I fish a LOT in the Gulf of Mexico... Sometimes, I fish "number" or spots that may only be about the size of a car hood. I always handle anchoring by myself.

If you do have a marker thrown, it sure does/can make it a lot easier, but, I don't and here's what I do.

I'll anchor once, away from my spot to get an anchor heading from the compass. Now that I know the heading, I can drive over my spot using the anchor heading. I'll get a certain distance past the spot, then deploy my anchor. I always deploy it WAY ahead of my spot, then release rode to get myself back over the number/spot... Works very well for me.

I've heard of the idea that once you get anchored, run a rope from the stern of the boat, back to the anchor line at the bow. You can "pull" at the stern end of the line and "swing" the boat to port/stern (depending on what side you have your new line on). I've never tried it but it does make sense... I'll try to draw a picture...

Re: Single handed anchoring

I've heard of kayak fishing folks using the line port/starboard to move from side to side. Thanks for your response and insights.
