Single, Double, Triple Beam?

I'm buying my first fish finder. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different transducer types? I was thinking Humminbird, but they don't seem very popular here. What can I get in the $150-$200 range that will last? Do the thru-hull transducers work as well as the transom mount?
