I have a #217-586612 Model Gamefisher 5HP (ESKA)

It had a L87YC in it.

Downloaded a service manual for ESKA's and it said to use a J13Y* for all

AV520 AV600 AV750 AV817 Models.

Than the * led me down to this text..

*Recommended spark plug after 1976 is a Champion RJ13Y

I believe my friend's Gamefisher is a 1984 or 1985.

Should I be using a Champion RJ13Y and if so with what gap?

Thanks again guys, sorry I have all these tedious endless questions but I like to do stuff %110 and learn too. You guys are awesome !!

Re: Simple spark plug question

yep, the rj14yc and even the rj12yc (if you can find it) will work just fine and rj12yc may have even been specified in some manuals for the later 83-85 models, but absolutly the gap is .35 thousands as per the Sears Tecumseh 2 cycle manual ,not .30 as has been posted.
I strongly advise to get a good shop manual.

Re: Simple spark plug question

hello damian, not to confuse you but the service manual i've got listing the av 520,600,750,and817 all show same plug and gap j13y .030 which cross references to a rj14yc and a gap at .030. again not trying to confuse anyone i'm just going off the service manual, which doesn't list future technical bulletins or revisions. let me know when you get those parts i sent you they went out mon afternoon. mr crabs if you read this i have some questions to ask you about a previous post about the gasket thickness, i tried sending you a private message but i was unsuccessful. thanks, good luck damian.

Re: Simple spark plug question

aftermarket manuals like intertec will say .30 but there just plan incorrect on a lot of stuff, and not wanting to drag this out any further and I an't going to fuss much over measaly .05 thousandths but I do have in my hand the original Tecumseh shop manual with spec tables per engine model and it is for a fact .35 accross the board on the AV817 and 520 600 750 so if you want to have you engine run its best then best not to argue with the engineers who designed the little motors.

check out my youtube of my Eska 7.5 running...and remember its gapped at .35 as per the factory manual,

http://youtu.be/3SbStxqaVXA running a rj12yc gapped .35 pushing a 14' long 54"wided across the bottom and loaded down jon boat. when they run like a dog its because there poorly tuned and the transom setup is bad. The Tecumseh 2 cycle is the simplest engine to tune I have ever worked on....

if your a Eskayahoo member you can e-mail me from there and would be glad to have a palaver with you, I just can't deal with each and evey PM I get...some people just join Iboats to PM me and never post one question on the board.... it gets old...however I am dedicated to the yahoo group for our common edification. I just want the info stored safe and secure in case I need to take a dirt nap some day....LOL

and remember kids If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it.

Re: Simple spark plug question

thanks for that info, i'll try to find you on the yahoo group. i agree that tecumseh engines are a dream to work on especially with all the china knock-offs that look just like a honda. funny thing about it is that most places say you can't get the repair parts for the carbs as they say the entire carb needs to be replaced but we have found many honda aftermarket parts will do the job just fine. again thanks for your info and i can't thank you enough for helping me on my 9.9 hp eska it runs like a champ, should those plugs be gapped at .035?

I'm kind of into doodlebugs, My grandson has a Rivet w/ 97cc lifahn? POS before I put the fist drop of gas in it I changed the Chinese stock jet to a honda G100 #62 ( really cool miniibike parts) http://rcmp-usa.com/Home_Page.html

I want one with a AV817 from a Rupp and a jack shaft:D

Re: Simple spark plug question

I apologies I'm wrong, your 21786xxx number is a late model, I had it confused with the 217586x models, I should have payed more attention, however beside these late models all other plugs gap at .35...

All Sears Outboards with model numbers 217.586000 and above where built by Eska Outboard in 1985 - 1986. Eska closed and stopped production in 1986.
Most of those motors used a 50:1 Oil Mix. Most used Plugs J-12-Y with a gap of .030

I should follow my own advice eh?

If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it.

Re: Simple spark plug question

What year is the 540, thats a nice road machine. Ive got a 1987 325i with 300K + miles, runs like it has 100k.

Though Im saving for a tow vehicle , trying for a 98-99 4Runner.

Cool little by little Im gonna get this motor going, hopefully it has no ignition problems, like I said I put a spark tester and it seemed good.

Again Thanks for all your support , and everyone else too ! I know Iv'e been hitting this forum up hard.

Hopefully Ill get a video of it in a barrel and tested on a small boat. :)
