Simple Q-changing oil

Just a quick simple question...

I recently purchased a 1994 Four Winns with an OMC Cobra, 3.0 L, and I'm doing the spring maintenance.

When doing the oil change, it looks like theres an oil tube coming from the bottom of the pan to the side by the oil pressure guage. I'm assuming this is the oil drain tube.

My question is this... is there a specific oil draining pump I need to remove the oil or will any generic model work?

Any generic oil pump should do, either you can stick the thin hose down the dipstick tube or if the tube has a threaded part at the top you can actually attach a garden hose fitting to it and use the suction of the pump to draw it up the tube.

I have a Jabsco PAR hand pump that has the hose fitting on the end. Around $35.

Many years ago, I used the drill operated one and it lasted one oil change. Not sure if they are built any better now.

Spart---you can also buy a hose from any marine supply catalog. One end replaces your engine drain plug. The other end has a brass cap. Warm the oil, pull the line through your bilge drain hole, and pop the cap.

I let that drain into a plastic pan. While draining, I also pop the drive leg plugs and it all drains into one pan (it is actually a plastic kitty litter box).

While it is draining, I head over to NAPA to purchase my drive gear oil, engine oil, and filter. When I return, all is drained, all is good.

His drain plug is already different. On his OMC the dipstick tube goes to a fitting that is threaded into the oil pan. By sucking out of the dipstick, it is sucking out of the drain hole.

Re: Simple Q-changing oil

I looked at the engine again last night.

Theres a small tube coming up the left hand side of the engine block, (while facing the engine from the inside sitting area), thats different from the oil dip stick tube. The small tube I have has a cap on top of it that appears to be threaded with a chain attached back to the block.

From what I've read in other threads and schematics, thats the oil removal tube, and the threading likely allows hooking up a water hose to it.

So it sounds like I need to find a pump that will attach to the small tube threads and can then pump it out into another container.

I'll check Walmart, and the local marina parts shops and see what they have for pumps (manual and electric). I see they have some here on iboats too, but I want to get something soon vs waiting on mail if possible.

Thanks everyone!

btw: Is there a difference between auto oil and marine oil?

Do a search on the oil. LOTs of discussion. Beware, it's scary in there . . . ;)

On the dipstick tube thing. My guess is that you will not find the correct threaded thing at Walmart, but you will probably find a generic pump with a plastic tube. This will work fine if you:

a) Get the plastic tube all of the way down into the metal tube and,

b) Get the oil good and hot, this will make your life a whole lot simpler.
