Simple Oil Change has me scratching my head

Was finishing up on an oil change in my 5.7 Mercruiser last night and wasn?t able to unscrew the cap to add oil back in to the engine. I couldn?t turn right and all I got was a clicking sound when I turned left. I grabbed a pair of pliers and tried to turn?now the cap just turns both ways and doesn?t unscrew?.did I inadvertently damage something? I?d also like to make sure I?m not running the risk of losing oil pressure in this area if the cap doesn?t come off.

I am hoping to leave as is if that?s okay and (patiently) add the oil through the dipstick reservoir?but want to make sure I don?t make matters worse by leaving the cap as is.

takes a long time to add 5 Qts thru the dipstick tube. Just remove the valve cover, remove the oil fill cap, and replace it.

or use a funnel that fits a 1/2" heater hose, and put it down one of the vent elbows for now.

Sounds like it's broke, maybe put some duct tape over the top, then get a ply bar of some kind and break the top off of it

Most engines have an oil fill on both valve covers. Many on the starboard side are real hard to get at without moving something out of the way like the shift bracket. You way also have a vent hose on one or each side.
