Hey all,
The family and I are trying to take a trip down to the springs this upcoming weekend, if the rain ever stops.
We are going to trailer down from Jacksonville, but have no idea where the closest ramp is for us to launch from.
Also if there are any good eateries that we can go to on the water down that way.
Any input from the locals or others that know the area well would be great.
We do most of our boating up in the JAX / OP area and haven't ventured that far south on the St. Johns yet.
From what I have been able to find the springs would be a decent place for the kids to play and swim in some good clear water, unlike the water up this way....

Thanks for any input!

Astor is probably the closest place to put in at and there are a couple restaurants right there on the river in Astor. Be careful with Lake George... it can get pretty rough on breezy days and bad weather.

Looking online I see a lot of ramps in Astor, which would be the best recommeded for use? I'm trailering a 25foot boat that has about a 31inch draft.

Right at SR40 (the Astor bridge) is a decent ramp. There are also restaurants right there. The big one is the Blackwater Inn on the west side of the river, but for GREAT cheesburgers, go over to the little bar next to the motel. Get the double with cheese and a handful of napkins. Simply the best!

You picked a great weekend for the springs. Generally, there is only about 2' of water at the mouth of Silver Glen, but with all of the recent rains, you should have no problem getting in and out. BTW, that 2' depth only runs about 5-10 feet long, and I've seen many boaters simply idle in, raise their drive up and slide right across...but like I said, plenty of water now.

FYI...if you like your beverages, keep them in a cooler and out of sight if the FWC is at the entrance. Once inside, red plastic cups.

The weekends at Silver Glenn Springs will have a very zoo-like atmosphere with LOTS of boats, people, music playing, etc., so if you're lookin' for peace, quiet and tranquility, that ain't the place. You might also cruise down to the other end of Lake George and check out Salt Springs....good for swimming, snack bar, nice grocery store within an easy walk for fried chicken, etc.!;)

Re: Silver Glenn Springs trip

The Glen has calmed down quite a bit. A few years ago, it got really rowdy when an owner of a local strip club used to bring in his "go-fast" with a bunch of his 'girls' aboard. The local FWC cracked down on that. Don't get me wrong...I'm all for a great party, but it has to be the right time and place. Saturday night at midnight? Go for it. Saturday afternoon at 2:00, with 50 kids running around...not so much.

There are still a lot of ...uh...adult entertainment to be seen, but not nearly as bad as it once was.

Ended up not making the trip. Work got in the way of getting out of here early enough. Just stayed around JAX. Was a little worried about the atmosphere down there with the kids. We are still going to try the trip latter this summer. Thank you al for the info
