Boat has no bottom paint and has been slipped from april till now....

Trying to detail a boat with a friend. We power washed all the heavy algae off and was wondering how to get brown film off the boat. Someone said only use slimy grimy, and others say works toilet cleaner is the same thing and will work just as well. This is a white hull so it needs to come perfectly clean. Any recomendations?

Slimey grimey is oxalic acid. That cht works wonders. I have and endless supply from my local household hazardous waste drop off recycle center as many deck/wood cleaners are oxalic based, and there are always gallons there free for the taking. I haven't tried toilet cleaner but i KNOW Slimey Grimey works well.

I've used Davis FSR and it worked well but was kind of pricey. There's also on/off hull cleaner. Just watch your skin.

Very interesting about the toilet cleaner. You learn something new every day!

April thru Sept with no bottom paint.I would only use Marykate On Off.I use toilet bowl cleaner,Sno bowl from Wally world for $1 a bottle. It works good,Not great. You will probably need On-Off which is the best.Charlie

I have never used Toilet bowl cleaner, so no advice there, but like above starbright products work well. If you get some staining that will not come off, use a hull compound like 3m. If it still is stained "wet" sand with 1200 grit paper. This works great to bring an older hull back to new. You will then want to put a good coat of wax on it. I prefer Woody's wax.

I started out using the Starbrite stuff and just about wrecking my shoulder every fall from hard scrubbing. Then I tried toilet bowl cleaner and it worked so good it scared me off. Literally just wipe on with something that has a long handle, wait five minutes, and rinse off.

I just wasn't sure how repeated use would affect the gel coat. There's no way it's a tough as a porcelain toilet bowl. The fact that oops recommends it helps a lot but I switched to On/Off (which is probably just about the same stuff but 30 x the price...

On/Off results below. Wish I had a before pic, but about an hour prior to this shot the boat was sporting a nice yellow layer of scum everywhere you can see hull that now looks white. And I'm talking the kind of scum a power washer wouldn't touch full force from inches away. It's not as strong as toilet bowl cleaner so it required application, very light rubbing to spread it around, sitting for about 15 minutes, then rinse. Incredible. Just be sure to protect your skin and eyes, stay upwind, and keep the drips off your galvanized trailer. Nasty stuff but at least you don't need much.

StarBrite hull cleaner works great. I never tried the toilet bowl cleaner, but I do know some of those products are a dark brown right out of the bottle and I just wonder if that would cause any additional staining?

Humm... StarBrite says use caution as it can damage a galvanized trailer... I have a very nice 2010 I like alot so I'm a little hesitant... Especially with something even stronger like the toilet bowl cleaner. Anyone encounter this?

I cant believe How much Slimy Grimy is!!! I see it for $26 at our local place! *(I'd buy it here if I go that route).

I just used "the Works" on my boat last week. It's only $1.50 a bottle at Wally World. I put it in a spray bottle. It's very effective IMO.....and cheap!

I believe any hull cleaner will discolor a galvanized trailer. Wet it down before applying the cleaner and keep the hose handy in case you get any drips.

I have used Slimy Grimy ($25) at the local Marine dealer. Seems to stretch a looong way. I am anal about my boats looks so I hit the white bottom of the boat about every 4-6 times the boat sees the water. Just spray it on, give it a quick scrub with a long handled brush and rinse. However.... Like others have said... WATCH YOUR GALVANIZED TRAILER....IT WILL LEAVE A MARK! I sure wish someone had told me that before I used the stuff the first time.

If you use Works cleaner (I do, it works great). make sure it has Oxalic acid in it (they make 2 types cleaner, just read the back label it will say what it contains).
