I have an 88 alpa1 drive and when I am at the back of the boat I can move the drive a little side to side. I tightened the two bolts at the gimbal ring but still have play, what could be the cause of the play, and what are the fixes? I have the drive off now for the winter to change the impeller.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... It could be slop in the steerin' system,...

Have someone shake the steerin' wheel, while you observe the linkages, 'n what-nots at the transom...
Then have 'em shake the drive...
Better yet, have 2 someones, 1 at the wheel, 'n 1 at the drive, 1 shake, 'n 1 hold, then again, oppositely...
All while yer Inspectin'...

Every boat has some slop, nature of the beast. What are you trying to fix?

Re: Side to side play in alpa1

I checked and there is no play at the steering,I can see the shaft that comes from the drive to the rack and when the drive is moved by hand side to side the shaft is not moving. To me the play seems to be more than just some slop, I could possibly live with the play if its not going to give me any problems or cause something to break.
