Side Boat trailer guides

I just bought a set of rollers trailer boat guides that bolt on the sides of the trailer. how far should they be from the boat itself.

i just bought the same ones roller guides u say they should be about one inch from the boat ? a friend of mine said to be careful how close u put them that the front of the boat is usually wider then the back is this true or is my friend full of it?
