Shutdown overheat

My boat has run at 170 on the temp guage for the 2 years I've owned it...but I noticed this weekend that when I shut the engine off to get someone out of the boat to ski or tube, that when I restart the engine the temp is up to 200+...It also has steam coming out of the exhaust. It doesn't come back down to 170 until I get going 2000 rpm or more. I had a new impellor put in last spring. Is this normal or is it a sign of my engine's water pump not moving enough water??

Re: Shutdown overheat

Is it raw water or FWC?
How can you tell that there is steam coming out with the drive in the water?
170* is warm for that engine, even FWC....
Something is definately amiss.....
I would check the impeller.....
If that looks OK, then you most likely have a restriction somewhere......JK

Re: Shutdown overheat

It is cooled with the Lake water. The exhaust is out the transom...I can see the steam. I'm ordering a new temp guage cause this one is 20 yrs old...just for accuracy sake. It's always ran at 170 even after I had the new impellor put in but the steam is what has me concerned that maybe the water pump on the engine is bad....

Am I barking up the right tree?? Is it possibly the engine water pump or is it more likely the new impellor??

Re: Shutdown overheat

I doubt that it is the engine circulation pump...
It would be hard to rot the vanes off in fresh water....
I would check the impeller for starters....
Pull the water hose from the power steering cooler while running on the muffs & see how much flow you have...
Caution: 30 seconds should be enough or you will fry the exhaust boots....
170 is too warm for a raw water cooled engine, are you sure you have the right t-stat?
Should have a 140-143......JK

Impeller installed backwards? Be sure it's "feathered" the right way.

Re: Shutdown overheat

check inpellar but also check manifold and risers for a blockage or build up of sediment sounds like its just not getting enough water at low rpms so there is a restriction someplace..

Re: Shutdown overheat

The impellor was installed by the dealer..hopefully it is right. The thermostat is 140 degree new last year. I'll take the inlet water hose off and see how much water is coming in. Should it be gushing or a mild flow??

Re: Shutdown overheat

A strong, steady flow....
Not gushing, not trickling.....
You will know when you see it.....JK
