Shower pump operation / wiring

My question is about the Shower pump.
Whenever I used the shower, I had to turn the breaker on in order to get the pump started and it would run until I turned it off....I came to the conclusion that the float switch should regulate it on /off , so I removed the float switch, and found it to be out. However; after I removed the float switch, the breaker still activates the pump. It appears to be the original pump and wiring with three wires running to the pump/switch.
I thought it should be only two with the switch breaking one of them ... being a shower pump novice, maybe I'm missing something.

1) Shouldn't your shower pump work automatically after turning on the breaker ?
2) Or do you have to turn off the breaker to cut the pump off and on?
3)Apparently one wire is the neutral. One is switched by the Breaker and the third is always hot.(which was connected to the switch.)

Thanks

Re: Shower pump operation / wiring

1) Yes
2) NO
3) I would connect the one thats always hot(as long as its fused) to the float switch, then from the float switch to the pump. This would eliminate the chance of forgetting to turn the breaker on when showering. Could also assist in pumping the bildge if it flooded. I know the pump and switch are in an enclosed box, but if it were necessary the cover could be removed.

Then you have a spare breaker you could use for something else, or you could attatch it to the third wire from the pump so you could overide the float switch if it were necessary of if the float switch were to fail.
