I've got an '88 17.5' Invader I/O and an 88 EZLoader.

For the first 12 years it was driven only 5 miles to the lake. The past 6 years, I've towed it quite a bit around texas. The usualy is 40 mile to the lake but sometimes I take it 180 miles each way. Let's say I take it out 8 times/year.

That's the background. How do I know if it makes any sense to change the leaf springs?? I'm going to be changing out the axle to put on brakes so that's why I'm considering it now.

If they are severely rusted or if they sag with load on them reducing travel, change them.

Otherwise, if they aint broke leave them be.

If it were mine I'd change them. Springs are dirt cheap compared to anything else related to boating.

How about a torsion axle assy to kill 2 birds w/ one stone?

I guess your fenders would be in the same place? :p

Nice idea and they have been around for years. They are expensive. I once owned a camper with that setup. No particular problems with it but my conventionally sprung trailers towed better. A sagging leaf spring can be replaced for just a few bucks. Rubber that takes a set requires replaclement of the entire axle.

If your a salt water boater the torsion axles are worth their weight in gold. They are zero maintence which leaves more time for catching fish not replacing springs :)

If you boat in salt water with a leaf spring trailer, when you replace the springs, smear em all over with Pennzoil Marine grease, then after each lauch spray with Boeshield or similar corrosion inhibitor. My springs used in salt for 4 seasons have no rust on them at all!
