Ok, I've read a lot of the previous post on hydrofoils, but still can't figure out if I should replace mine or leave it off. I'm guessing leave it off, but figured I'd check with the experts:D .

89 17' Cobalt 175hp ,merc I/O - With power trim tabs.

The Hydro that came with the boat is partially broken on the port side and at first I figured I needed to replace A.S.A.P, but after reading some of the previous threads I'm not so sure now.

Seems like I will get better fuel economy and top end speed without the foil, did I read that correct?

Hearing sooo much anout smart tabs, but I assume I would not want to get rid of my power tabs for those?

Also, I'm new to boating so to get on plane faster I need to lower the trim tabs all the way down and then adjust up wards as I get speed?

Thanks guys, you have been a wealth of information:D .

P.s. Having the outdrive rebuilt as a precaution, so first time out with the boat will be Friday.

Re: Should I replace Hydrofoil?

you are correct. remove the foil, do not replace. really no need for it since you have tabs. no need to replace the tabs if they work well. and yes, if you want to get on plane faster, tabs should be down at rest. once on plane, bring them back up if your goal is to increase speed. or leave down to stay on plane at a lower speed.

since it's the first time out in the boat, i'd first leave the tabs in a neutral setting and just get aquainted with the boat, using the trim only. see how she acts first, then mess with the tabs.

WE make Smart Tabs, and my suggestion is to remove the hydrofoil and learn to use the trim tabs. Just take the boat out and practice until you are comfortable. You should not need any additional lifting device (hydrofoils).

I 100% agree with your assessment and also with the two wonderfully gifted posters who responded. As a great mind once said, "Friends don't let friends use Hydrofoils . . . " :D
