Should I replace gas tank?

Hi all,

I recently bought an early 90's yamaha 4-stroke 9.9 hp and it came with a 6.5 gallon gas tank along with line between the two. When I squeeze primer bulb, I can hear air escaping somewhere around the tank (with vent open or closed) and the bulb won't fill up. I can usually putt along right above idle, but when I open up the throttle, then the bulb flattens out and I lose all fuel to the motor OR sometimes it stays in original round condition but still very little or no fuel and again, at higher RPM's, the motor runs out of gas.

I'm about to take a trip out to Siletz River (OR) area this weekend - i'm tempted to replace gas tank and line. The plastic line connector to brass fitting on tank end seems to be loose - if I don't have it just rigt, this is when problems seem to occur. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You do open the vent on the tank don't you? If that is true, then there is a restriction between the primer bulb and the bottom of the pickup tube in the tank. Some of those fittings can be accidentally reversed. Make sure you have it right.

I'd start little by little: change the end fittings, then the bulb, then the hoses and only then, the tank. No since buying it all new for one failing part. Process of elimination. Or, just go buy a new tank and a new fuel hose/bulb/fittings and start from scratch. It's not a "new tank" is it, made after 2011? I ask because I had one and since I didn't have a newer fitting on my motor, it did something similar. I ended up using an older cap for the tank and all is well now.

BTW, when did these gas tanks get so dang high? Sheesh.

Yes, vent is open. Tank is probably as old as the motor. Can't read the fuel level through the sight glass - it's all stained and fogged up. Since I"m leaving Sat. for OR coast, I don't really have time to go thru process of elimination - I'm 30 miles either way from any kind of store that would carry such parts, so leaning towards new setup.

Heck, Walmart sells red plastic tanks with fittings for a few dollars....maybe just go "new tank" since you're heading for the coast!:)
