Have a Evinrude 200XP on a Ranger 390V boat, both 1987 models, Have been having trouble with idling and no low end power on take off. I took off carbs and rebuilt and put new Oring gasket on intake behind carbs, which someone had torn and had put back on with siicone. Engine sounds like it is running better on garden hose. My question is the engine has not got a jackplate and is in the lowest mounting holes. Should I raise the engine up to the highest holes? Also I'm running a Racker 14 1/2 X 24 3 blade prop and turning only 5000 Rpm's at w.o.t.. Should I try a different prop maybe a 14 1/2 X21 to get my Rpm's up and if so should I raise engine up with this prop also?

Re: Should I raise engine

You need a jackplate. I had a similiar problem with my motor raised it a inch on the jackplate and it comes out alot better. Someone else would have to help you with the changing the prop thing. You'll turn more rpm's when you raise it up. I don't know what your optimal rpm range would be but mine runs in between 5600-5800 and i have a 175 rude. You should be somewhere around that i would think.

why would you need a jack plate to raise the motor and inch? it has adjustment holes. that motor would like the AV plate 1 inch above the keel.

He needs a jackplate for the set back.

Rick, it's hard to follow if you start another whole thread. Ask the mods to close this one and let's continue the other one so we're not covering the same ground twice.
