I've been looking around for a 21-22' starcaft aluimin deep V hull.

I use my aluimin in Saltwater however I know to thoughly rinse w/ fresh water and dissconnect battery when not in use.

should I not even concider a aluimin that has been used in saltwater?

Thanks

If there's no visible corrosion, why hesitate? I wouldn't.

the corrosion I'm concerned w/ would most likely be under the floor. so a visuale inspection would'nt revele corrosion.

These Starcrafts poured in floation foam gets water logged over time which creates the corrosion. leaving battery connected compounds the corrosion.

I'm also concerned about the saltwater enviroment just being exposed to salt air.

The other key corrosion place is between the wood in the transom and the outside aluminum. I would not hesitate to purchase.

lots of aluminum boats are used in salt water, but usually not that big. If you are that worried about it, or have to buy an old old boat, go with glass and you will have more confidence in what you have. Lack of confidence in a boat (incl the motor) takes all the fun out of it. BTDT

Bring a glass guy......

I can only tell you that any aluminium boat is a didget amputation waiting to happen. :p

If you do decide to buy one......make sure the first aid kit is full of bandaids... :D
(if the boat looks good....and checks out.....buy it...)

I have had 4 aluminum boats and will probably be having another one made next year. I have never cut myself on one of them.

I had a early 70's 21' Starcraft Chieftain that I used in the Gulf of Mexico for years with no corrosion issuses at all. I still see it around. 40 years in and out of saltwater and it still lives.

I restored an 18' Holiday I/O that sat in lake Dallas, semi submerged for a couple of years. Removing the deck yielded sheets of closed cell Styrofoam, like coffee cups are made of. I sprayed Clorox on it to kill the algae and when it was time to put things back together I was pleasantly amazed that it was fully dried out and ready to do it's thing for another 30 years.

Salt water problems to me would revolve around an I/O and they would be engine related. Otherwise, no concern.

I would be more concerned about stuff in boat not being properly grounded and boat being eaten alive

Re: should I not even consider purchasing a used Aluminum boat from salt water enviro

here's a concern that will be hard to determine: if you put the wrong kind of anti-fouling paint on an aluminum boat you can have corrosion issues, except in my case my dad made me strip it all off before we launched (what--a 15 year okld won't listen to instructions?) So if you get an old saltwater tinnie with a painted bottom, you want to know what's on there.

orginal paint appears to be holding up well.

I'm guessing this boat was well taken care of (seller has a bunch of cleaning stuff funny I've never done more than wipe mine AL outside hull downw/ a H20 moistened rag) and removed from saltwater after each use.

Thanks Guy's for all the helpfull infor.I'll let you Guy's know if I deside to get this blue water boat.

Lots of people have them around here. My neighbor is in the market for a tinny right now, and it's all salt water.

Re: should I not even consider purchasing a used Aluminum boat from salt water enviro

Ditto. I take my tinny into/out of salt, fresh, brackish water all the time. Often on the same trip. The bigger problem to look for may be the boat's hardware, which may/may not corrode more readily in a saltwater environment. Believe it or not, the salt air does every bit as much damage (if not more) than salt water itself. Unless the hardware is aluminum and/or Stainless Steel it will eventually rust out if exposed to marine environments long enough. However, if you're not going to use it much on salt water and rinse it down well after any salt water use, you should be fine. I used to take my 17' flat-back canoe out to the beach for years. It was great and showed no ill effects. I always made sure to rinse it of when I got home, but otherwise it was stored uncovered outside for years. Keep us posted on the purchase one way, or the other.
