Should I leave the outboard installed while towing?

I have a 14' Meyers with a 1976 Johnson 35hp tiller steer. I was wondering if most people leave their outboards installed on the boat when they tow or if they pull them off and stow them. I'm a little leary about bouncing down the interstate and having my motor fall off the back. It's a bit heavy and sometimes I have trouble taking if off and putting it back on by myself. I was just looking for everyone's .02 Thanks!

Leave it on.....if your transom is in good shape it wont harm anything.

My 25hp has clamps and bolt holes, so If yours does as well......get some bolts in there. I take my 5.5 off just because I dont have a lock for it, but I wouldnt worry about it at all if I did tow with it. In fact I dont think I have ever heard of anyone taking the motor on and off much past 10hp......

If you are worried about bouncing etc, you can get a transom saver which will help. (that will open up a can of worms. Do a search and see why) Welcome to iboats :)

Leave it on and lock it in the "up" position. All should be well unless the transom is rotten. Use a transom saver to save any undue stress.

if you have enough clearance to leave it tilted all the way down, that's the best way to trailer. secure it if it bounces. Long as the boat's tied to the trailer, the springs will absorb the shock.

do not use the tilt lock to lock it up when towing. they were not designed for that. use a transom saver. i agree with using the transom mount bolts, and thru bolts is the best way. it also cut down on theft. doesn't stop them, but gives you time to get the shotgun.
