Should I change the jets?

Hi,

I'm in the midst of an entire powerhead rebuild of my 1988 Evinrude 88 SPL. Two of the pistons failed and began to break apart due to pinging I believe. I am having all the cylinders bored/honed and installing .020" oversize pistons. The question I have is, should I go up a jet size to prevent going lean in the future? Will going up a size be detrimental to power?

I don't want to have to rebuild this again...not cheap.

Thanks

dirt in the carb is what caused it to go lean in the first place

stay on top of fuel system maintenance

no need to change jets.

Thank you, I'm about to take apart the carbs and take a look. They were rebuilt 2 years ago along with the fuel pump and strainers. Hard to believe something would have gotten in there already.

What is your take on how often you should pull the carbs just to look inside?

I have read that the Evinrude/Johnson 150 tends to have an issue with going lean and it is recommended to up the jet size just as a precaution. Is that never the opinion regarding the 88?

Thanks again.
