Re: Should I Buy This Boat??

Beware of this dealer. He gave you a BS story. E-10 gasoline in this boat should run perfect.

agreed. Much as I detest E10 and believe it causes a lot of people a lot of problems, no way it would account for a brand new engine failing and not restarting. And besides, the boat should be equipped standard with a seperator, not that it stops all water/e10 issues, but should have made the difference.

Unless maybe the dealer put 5 gallons of untreated e10 in the tank and let it sit for a year until the next buyer came along (who fell for the underpowered boat trick). Even then, dealer fault.

I don't think I'd upgrade the motor in the first place since it's on a bowrider.

Run away! To echo the comments from other posters, no way 10% ethanol gas has enough water content to separate in a short period of time and cause the engine to die. I'm a dedicated ethanol hater that buys all of my gas from a non-ethanol station, but it's not THAT bad. They are playing you for a fool and not admitting the real issue. Remember that the warranty is only as good as the dealer.

As for the boat, I have an 18' Tahoe bowrider with a 190 HP V6 and would only consider it adequate for tubing. 115 HP on a 19' doesn't sound like much.

You can buy a new engine on a new boat, and have a dealer put in old bad gas (to save money) and it will run for a while then bog and die under throttle. It happened to me with a new Yami.

Yep no real way to tell how old the fuel was or if water got in some other way.

Tell me if I am wrong, I have a 1984 3.7 Merc. I tried regular pump gas and it would not idle. I filled it with super and now it's runs great. I was told, besides the octane difference there was less ethanol and to run super in all my motors with the exception of my 2006 truck.

A thread hijack, but I'll answer it anyway.....

Your first problem is believing what you were "told".

The ethanol is the same...bad advice. That's an old motor - how long since its been properly serviced?

You have a classic problem - it needs a tune-up. The timing may be off, but most assuredly your spark plugs are shot.

agreed; that was my point. According to the OP, the dealer led him to believe it was the E10, and not the age of the E10, that caused the problem ("The problem turned out to water in the fuel. The dealer used gas with ethynol by mistake and had to drain and clean out the tank"). Either the OP didn't understand the dealer's explanation or the dealer has a non-boater and is dancing him down the road.

Everyone noticed that they are putting a 115 on it, Correct? I would think a different engine would cure most of the problems the op had. I definately would keep that boat on in-land lakes though.
