Should I buy a livable 40ft powerboat that runs great or move into a ikeaified apt?

I'm much older and was thinking this very thing recently. Selling the house, moving to a warmer climate and finding an old 40' + salon cruiser or houseboat to live on. Haven't mentioned to the wife though.
When I was late teens, my Dad had a 31' cruiser moored in Ipswich, MA and I would spend a week or two each summer living on board. A bit cramped but fun.

make sure the boat uses diesel fuel, not gasoline.

You really need to put your location in your signature, as you might get better replies knowing what region you're in.

Unless you're in the far South, I wouldn't consider full time boat living for 12 months out of the year. It sounds good because you're young, but as you get older, you'll yearn for a place on land to call home. There are some people living on the water at Lake Lanier (Atlanta), and they even have a hard time in the winter.

Annapolis, MD

make sure the boat uses diesel fuel, not gasoline.

Why so?

It is a 1985 Silverton 40 Aft Cabin.

X4.....rotten dog....but, I will get there one day

X5. If the Mississippi didn't get a foot of ice on it in the winter, I'd do it myself. My only worry would be the ice crushin the hull and my house sinking in the marina. Propane heaters have come a long way in the last few years.

That's why you motor south for the winter.

What in the heck is a "ikeaified" apt?

I guarantee the OP's reference involved this somehow :D

Anything to avoid pay taxes (property) would be a big advantage (but you did say apt.), not to mention that as you age this will be less and less appealing. I would go for it as long as you can, just never know if you can do it again. I have a consultant that does this; SHE lives on her cat sail boat and keeps her Harley, right there too. During the winter she builds a temp cover and bubbles the boat. I don?t think I would do it in the winter in Michigan, too much work IMO.

If you can get 110v power to the boat, you can keep the ice at bay. Only concern on a river setting, are ice flows in the spring.

These churn warmer water from the bottom to the surface, and can actually melt back frozen over areas.

Other option is a compressor on shore, and a line of bubblers around the boat. Same effect.
