I used to live on a sailboat for a year and loved it. Now that I am a bit older (28) I am at a cross roads. If I do not do it now it is likely ill never move onto a boat in the foreseeable future. The Apts in my area start at 1200 a month + utilities. With little left to afford anything else a month. On the boat ill have no utilities (included in slip fee). The best part I am living on the water in a very expensive place to live for 400 less than an apt.
What are your thoughts? What would you do?

If you're happy on the boat, then go for it!...A 40 ft. powerboat should be pretty roomy!

The boat sounds like the most fun. Save money for haul out and maintenance. Don't let a woman talk you out of it :D

If it were just me, I would do it in a heartbeat, but unfortunately, I waited til I got married to decide that was what I wanted to do. Now I have a wife and a 12 year old daughter that like the creature comforts of our house, and with the housing values so low, I dont think I could sell it anyway.

So in short, go for it while you still can.

Im 29, this is my third season living on the water, in a 40ft houseboat.
At my latitude, its a seasonal thing, and I pay rent to a friend to stay in his spare room in the winter, but I can get 6-8 months on the water.... And I do it on a mooring 200yards out.

My only advice, DO IT.

I live pretty rough at this point, as its constant renovations to the boat to make it more livable, and provided luxuries like heat, or hot water, and I still wouldn't give it up.

Ha, actually, Im swaying as Im sitting here in this chair at work, because it takes me 30 seconds to get my sea legs, and 30 days for the feeling of this concrete floor rocking like a boat to subside.

Just makes you want to never leave the boat.

Oh, and I don't know if you're single or not but, uhh, I don't really have to say what happens with girls around big boats....

You really need to put your location in your signature, as you might get better replies knowing what region you're in.

Unless you're in the far South, I wouldn't consider full time boat living for 12 months out of the year. It sounds good because you're young, but as you get older, you'll yearn for a place on land to call home. There are some people living on the water at Lake Lanier (Atlanta), and they even have a hard time in the winter.

Live on a 40ft boat for less than $1200 a month? No brainer. Go for it. Still be lots of apartments out there if it all goes wrong.

Most sail boats are like living in a basement. You will love the power boat. Ps I have one for sale.

The garage is easily fixed by renting a storage/garage/warehouse/hanger space. Nice sized ones are in the $200 per month range around here. A couple years ago I rented one for $300 a month that was a double unit, so it was 4 bays, with a lift and deep enough to work on a 30ft boat inside. In the right town, hangers are cheap too.

Heck, Im in Vermont, and Im devising ways to live on the boat year round. Not there yet, but I will be....

Trouble in Atlanta? Winter in NC when I was working down there meant putting on a sweatshirt before I went out... I cannot foresee 'trouble'
