Hi everyone,
I am looking at a nice Doral Sunquest 190 with a fuel injected 4.3 Mercury.
I am just worried that I will have a hard time finding parts etc and the resale
on the boat will be poor due to the bankruptcy of the company.
Any thoughts about this?
Thanks folks :)

Welcome to iBoats . . .

My thoughts are that you will have to be self-reliant on replacement parts. Fortunately, the component parts of boats are typically parts that are commonly available (boat companies buy most of their stuff). You will just have to do a bit of research when things break, to figure out what manufacturer it is and then source the parts accordingly. A few parts may be custom and made specifically for Doral . . . (Railings, swim ladders, etc) Those will be a bit tougher to replace (so don't break those things) . . .

When you go to sell, you will be dealing with the same issue that you are now pondering . . . so your selling price will have to make it worthwhile for a buyer.

i went through a similar decision making process last year and ended up buying a Doral Elegante.

In the last year, I've studied the boat and look in every crevice i could, just because I like to understand how things work, where they are, and why it was designed that way. I must say, my Doral is a very well built boat and they didn't skimp on anything.

If you are referring to maintenance parts, like engines and drives, they aren't Doral specific so there are no problems there. Accessory stuff like hot water heater, lights, fridges, galley, gauges, and head stuff aren't Doral either.

things you're not going to find are dash replacement panels or acrylic cup holders or used parts like a Sea Ray/Bayliner.

At least on the Elegante, since it is a quality built boat, some little things can be more complicated and expensive to replace. for instance, instead of the typical big knob battery switches, my Doral uses an electronic remotely operated switch so the heavy gauge wire run is shorter and more efficient. After doing some research, i have found the manufacturer and downloaded the manual. If i need to replace, it won't be as cheap or easy to find like a standard switch.

Another example is the transom shower. Sure, just a transom shower, but instead of the plastic common dual knob hot and cold valves, mine is a metal one knob mixer valve.

Even the little magnetic transom door catch is stainless, looks nice and elegant, and cost over 50 bucks to replace, although I got a free replacement from the manufacturer.

I don't need to mention the obvious stuff like deck hardware, upholstery...

For me, I appreciate the quality and effort put into the little things and absolutely love my Doral. We may be going larger and Doral is on top of our list.

There really aren't model-specific parts available for ANY boat more than a couple years old so I wouldn't put too much thought or care as to whether the manufacturer was still in business. A non-obsolete powerplant is the major concern and you've got no issue there with a Mercruiser.

I just purchased a 2007 Doral Boca Grande and had all the same concerns you did. But after talking with a local marina that used to sell Dorals, I'm not worried. Almost any marina will work on any boat and they can get almost any part. They actually just got done replacing the wood laminate dash panels (sun damage) on a Doral and they custom made new dash panels because they couldn't get them anymore. Looks perfect and cost about the same.

Unfortunately in today's economy it's not that uncommon for boat companies to go into Bankruptcy and get bought out by another. As stated earlier the engine and a lot of the accessories can be still be purchased and there are plenty of custom fiberglass and metal shops that can fabricate almost anything else you might need. With a 6 year old boat I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you like the boat, feel it's well made and has been taken care of, plan to keep it for more than a year or two... don't sweat it.

As I posted in another thread here I'd pass on any model bowrider that was built in their dying years. They built crap the last few years and so you're more likely to end up with a junker.

And for those that don't know, the doral bowrider lines and cruiser lines were technically 2 different companies built in 2 different locations so just because a cruiser may be a good boat it does not make the bowriders good as they seem to the ones that were build like crap.

Happy Hunting.
