Should I buy 2000 Johnson 130???

Hello ... first time on the forum. I am about to buy a used boat with 2000 130HP Johnson 2-stroke outboard (model J130VXSS). I have heard some mixed opinions of these motors (heard that some of the newer Johnson motors have design/engineering flaws ... not sure if it includes this particular model). Does anyone have some insight as to the pros/cons of buying this motor? Would you advise me for or against buying? Thanks so much!

VanillaGorilla......Welcome to the forum. I think maybe you are confusing this motor with the early Evinrude Ficht motors. The Ficht's had some problems fromm 99-00, but the Johnson's remained carbed and basically the same design as always. They had some carburator issues, but at this point I wouldn't worry about it if that motor has been running. Have you test driven the boat? How does it run? Try testing the compression also, that will give you a good ides what's going on inside the motor. As far as I'm concerned Johnrudes are the toughest motors out there. Good Luck.

Thanks for the info MMC. No, haven't test-driven the boat yet. I've arranged to do that this weekend. You may be correct about me confusing this motor with the FICHT motors. Funny, you are in LI and I am there on business travel right now ... near Hauppauge. Thanks again for the advice ... think I am going to buy it if all is good this weekend. :)
