Should I be getting water out of telltale at WOT?

Just got done replacing my powerhead, and impeller -- Took the boat out last nite to test it out- Was getting water out of telltale at idle, but at WOT there was no water coming out of the telltale. I put my hand over it and felt a slight vaccuum at WOT. When I was idling and water was coming out it was warm. Boat ran great. Is this normal? I am overly paranoid about overheating b/c I cooked my last motor-

Was the impeller exactly the same as the other?

Yes it was exactly the same -- same # of fins etc.

Don't know what model you have, but my 1986 85HP does the same as yours. If it wasn't working, the temp alarm would go off too.

At WOT most of the exhaust gas and water is exiting through the motor leg underwater.

Re: Should I be getting water out of telltale at WOT?

Thankfully, this site saved me from myself. I had the temp Buzzer going of at mid-throttle and above. Checked tell tale with engine @ mid throttle and had little water coming out but had minimal flow and very hot water (burned my hand with a t-stat that is rated for 110 Degrees F)@ idle to 1/4 open throttle. I replaced the water pump and & t-stat, great flow @ idle to 1/4 throttle and minimal water flow at telltale with Mid\Wide Open throttle, but no temp Alarm. Started to tear down again and check for missing woodruff key but stopped, logged on to this site and found out that the reason for more flow @ tell tale @ low speed is the relief valve is open. When at higher speeds, the relief valve closes and most of the water flow is directed through exhaust and out the foot. Hope this helps.
