I was told to replace the water pump impeller in the old 9.5 Johnson because it was stored for many years. So I downloaded a shop Johnson Evinrude shop manual for my motor and started removing the lower unit to access the water pump. The instructions say to start removing the L/U with the motor shifted into forward gear. What I found was that when you drop the lower unit down enough to access the shift rod clamp screw, it pulls down on the shift rod and automatically shifts into reverse. This is no big problem for me because I intend to reassemble it the same way. What I have noticed though is that there is very little accurate step by step instruction to working on Johnson motors. I might have to hold the shift lever in reverse while I reassemble to be able to get the shift rod back up in place and the clamp screw put back in. There is a lot of gunk in the motor leg. I think I will spray it out with some kind of engine cleaner or something. Let it drain out upside down and blow it dry.

List the year of your motor in your post next time.
Buy the OEM hardcopy service manual next time.

Maybe I should try to find a hardcopy to compare with. This 1971 Evinrude service manual download sure looks authentic to me. The motor is a 9R73B Johnson and the pictures in the manual look just like it even if they are pictures of an Evinrude Sportwin 9.5.

The procedures should be the same as long as your model # is correct.
