Just bought a 1986 ebbtide with 230hp omc. When going slow the flappers are a little noisy. Clickity clack etc. The boat seems to ru fine otherwise (other then i suspect i may have a leak somewhere, still need to look into that)

Should i be concerned about the noisy flappers?

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Generally speakin', that means it's been run without water flow, 'n the rubber liners of the shutters have burnt off,...

Rattlin' shutters are better than no shutters, but it ain't Right,...

Re: should flappers be noisy at idle?

If this is a Cobra system, then the whole flapper is rubber, the only metal there is the rod that they pivot on. So they do not make noise like the Merc ones can. Unless some years used a metal/rubber one but the ones on my '88 are just one piece of molded rubber.
Now if its a stringer system (big boot on the transom) I have no idea never worked on one.

it's a 1986 mercruise alpha one omc 230 hp

roger that. Is likely likely the cause of water leaking into the bilge? Bilge pump is working but would it be a harmful to the engine to run it in this condition?

I've read on the web that sometimes the entire engine needs to be removed to fix. Any way to determine for sure?

Clearly I don't know what I have! hehe...the original paperwork I got with boat said omc 230 but they must have used both. ok, the engine says mercruiser 230 and the outdrive is a alpha one so must be merc, ok I admit it, I was a little confused.

ok bought some new flappers today at boat store and slapped them in. Installation was pretty quick and easy. Just some rubber couplings that had to be removed. Boat much quieter now. Thanks guys.
