I have a "2000" Merc 3 cylinder 40 HP, New...'bout 10 hours total time. The pig tail that connects the shift/throttle control box to the motor under the cowel and then uses bullet connectors to attach to "brain" box: The factory appparently uses their brand of tie wraps to bind all the bullet connectors together against the "+" lead to the starter. It was bound so tight by the factory that the sharp edges under the sheaths for the bullet connectors shorted by their sharp corners cutting through. They did not short to the starter lead but to each other. ONLY the ends of wires in the immediate area are damaged (all of them). This motor uses the same powerhead and wiring as the 50 HP and the 60 HP. Has anyone else come across this problem or seen or heard of it? Apparently it only shorted for very short time, the motor seems to still work ok but the wires and insulation in the immediate area is totaly burnt toast. I inspect my motor carefully before each trip the everglades to keep from getting stranded and this is what I found...
