Ok, so I may be asking a really stupid question, but here it goes. I have a trailer right now that has a 16ft. Ebbtide sitting on it right now. I am going to pick up a 18'8" Traveler 186 Sea Lion in a few days. My question is this. Since the boat I am picking up does not have a motor on it, is it ok to us a trailer that is short to haul the boat back home approx. 3 hours?

Re: short trailer

I did the same thing a few years ago with a boat & trailer of the same dimensions/conditions you describe without any problems. My one-way tow was 150 miles. I carried an empty five-gallon water bag for ballast in case it was needed but did not. The rear overhang of the boat on the shorter trailer resulted in an acceptable tongue weight. I could not move the axle for any compensation. However, prior to retrieving the boat, I did extend the bunks for support. Good luck!

Re: short trailer

SHOULD be ok but nobody can say for sure

If the axle is adjustable, moving it rearward is probably a good idea

Get it weighed and figure tongue weight before hitting the highway

Worst case you might have to take back roads at reduced speeds and make it a 6 hour trip home.

Re: short trailer

Thanks guys! I am using this as a "just in case" option, but am trying to get my hands on a trailer of proper length. I have a few leads, and will be touching base tomorrow so we will see. I hope I do not have to do this, but if all else fails, I may not have a choice. How far would you recommend moving the axle back if I do go this route?
