I have a 1979 johnson 35hp with a frozen lower unit. I have removed it .now trying to find a replacement. How do i measure if it's a short or long shaft?

You measure from where the motor rests on the transom to the cavitation plate.

You can see the difference quite easily.

Just for grins, you might measure the boat transom to see if the motor you removed had the correct shaft length for the hull.

The Yamaha motor model number tells weather the shaft is long or short, maybe Johnson also does the same.

The model # indicates long shaft with an ---L--- in it.----Or a standard 15" would have a 5" spacer to convert to long shaft.----With a picture of your actual motor it is identified in mere seconds.

??????? Would a 1979 model have a 5" spacer for a long shaft????? Just asking because the parts diagram shows the length is in the exhaust housing... Like in the photos I posted..

The spacer would only be used if it was a regular 15" shaft converted to 20".----As clearly indicated in post #8 I believe !!!!

?? Can you point out the "spacer" to me because I do not see it? Post number 3 clearly shows the short and long shaft motors without any spacer. The different shaft length is in the exhaust housing....

I clearly stated that a 15" short shaft can be changed to a long shaft with a kit.----The kit would include a 5 " spacer !!

The word "kit" was never used until post 13.. But as always you win . And I am wrong in saying that the 1979 35hp left the factory without a 5" spacer on the long shaft motor.

And honestly I do not care other then the fact that I said the difference between the 2 shaft lengths is obvious. And you still dismissed what I said as not important.

I’m sorry but I can’t believe this conversation is still going on. I don’t see that Limy is even in on this topic anymore. Limy is probably out fishing and you guys are still arguing. 😂
