Shop winterized it, can I de-winterize?

I didn't know enough about my 1997 4.3LX Mercruiser last year and didn't have time to research it so I took it to the shop to have it winterized. Well, he left out the 2 metal engine plugs that go to the block as well as the 2 blue plastic ones that go into elbows under the manifolds. I found these through investigation on my own as well as help from here. I noticed yesterday that he has pulled the "coil wire" off for whatever reason and taken off and set to the side the flat metal piece that is attached to some kind of wire and sits underneath the air filter. There is a hole in the center of it and it is supposed to sit on the same post/screw that the air filter sits on.

Anyway, I'm considering re-commissioning it myself instead of paying him 75 or 100 bucks to do it. Let me know if I leave anything out.

1. Replace block plugs and manifold plugs
2. reassemble air filter assembly
3. replace coil wire
4. put battery back in
5. attach muffs
6. Fire It Up!
7. After all the fogging fluid burns off, gap and replace spark plugs

I've also got to replace the oil, oil filter and water seperator because I failed to do this at the end of last year. I'll also replace the lower unit oil as this wasn't done either. All these are my fault and I'll be doing these prior to winterization next year. I'm even considering replacing the impeller as it doesn't seem too complicated and I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'll be greasing the spline and lubing the steering system too.

Does this sound thorough enough? Did I leave anything out? Thanks for the help.

You might consider getting an OEM service manual if you are going to be doing this yourself, that is in my experience of 40 years of maintaining my own stuff the best way short of having a mechanic teach you in person, or taking an adult ed course in sterndrive maintenance (also not a bad idea!)
Get the manual and learn the right way, then ask on here if you have questions.....

Yes, I've read that link and I do have a mercruiser manual. But, the manual doesn't go into much detail as far as re-commissioning the boat. I thought I'd post about what usual steps you all go through to see if I've missed anything. I'll also re-read the info on the link.

Why don't you tell us what you mean by re-commissioning.

Re: Shop winterized it, can I de-winterize?

Thanks Bond-0, I read that. See what I have to say below...

De-winterizing, my manual calls in recommissioning.

The reason I posted is I want to make sure I don't overlook something that the boat shop did last year that I forget/overlook this year. I want to cover all my bases. I simply tried to explain all that I had found when lurking around in the engine compartment so that I could get truly expert input from those of you that do this for a living or have done it for a long time. If I had winterized it myself I wouldn't have posted as the above link covers it all.

I know you all are the experts and I really value the information you provide. It sounds like I've hit a nerve and for that I apologize. I try to use search as frequently as I can because I'm sure you get asked the same thing 6000 times. But, aren't you just glad I didn't ask a question about engine oil????? Take care gentlemen. If you do feel I've left out something or feel it would simply be better for me to take it back to the shop since I didn't winterize it, please just let me know.

Re: Shop winterized it, can I de-winterize?

Thank you Sir! The days are getting warmer and I'm getting the itch to get back on the water. A little work on my part and I'll be there. Thanks for your help.

Ok, just for my knowledge, what is the flat metal piece with the hole in it that is attached maybe to some kind of wire and attaches underneath the air filter? Thanks in advance, Greg

Ayuh,... You don't have an Air Filter...

I'm guessin' yer talkin' about the retainer strap that holds the crankcase vent tubes to the Flame Arrester....

That's got to be it Bond-o. So, for the record, what's the air filter type thing called? Is that the flame arrestor? When I saw it I thought "wow, that sure is greasy/waxy for an air filter"..... So, I guess that's why I'm here, lol! Anyway, what kind of oil can I use in my 4.3....???? Just kidding. Thanks again for the input. My manual covers the oil issue pretty clearly. Thanks again

That's just blow by venting on your flame arrestor.. Clean it and stick it back on
