I Can fix cars all day long. Never been in a IO so I paid some one else to replace the impeller in my 86 alpha one IO for manintence. The boat was sometimes running hot but not over heating. I did this so I would not have problems on my week long 4th of july vacation. I got the boat back and sometimes the water will come up and some times the water will not come up from the IO. Sent the boat back to the shop where they had replaced the impeller and a shaft for the impeller. . They sad it was woren never looked at it myself. The shaft cost $125 had them replace it . So they took my boat back to the shop they pulled it apart and found nothing wrong with it. they ran it on the muffs no problems put it in the lake and sometimes it works but sometimes it does not . To day it did not work so I pulled off the hose from the IO to the warter pump housing. I sucked up the water by mouth then it worked till I shut it off. The shop is taking it back tomarrow they dont have a clue. has some one ever had this problem ?

p.s. ruin my vacation::devil:

I don't have a clue what you are trying to describe. The only shaft for an Alpha I drive is the vertical drive shaft in the drive. It costs more than 125 bucks, and takes a lower rebuild to replace it.

Is this shop you take your boat to a Mercruiser dealer or some guy with a sign that says he works on cars, lawnmowers and boats?

Anybody can work on "Watercraft". My question was, is he a certified Mercruiser dealer with the proper tools and manuals at hand to do the job.

do not believe him to be a certified mercruiser dealer, but not positive but it is the shop that has been working on it for the last ten years.

the only drive I ever saw with a pump drive shaft was the OMC cobra andon the cobra if the vent tube is not right it will lose prime.
if the correct pump kit was installed then look for any blockage or signs of melt in either housing.

sounds like "the guy" isnt "the guy" for your boat.

if you are mechanincally inclined an alpha water pump isnt much of a stretch with a manual.

Check the gaskets under the water pump housing. I had a "guy" replace the impeller on my pre-Alfa outdrive and went through 3 impellors before I found the problem. The pump worked fine at idle speed, but when I would take it on plane, the pump would suck air.

I believe the part is called the water pocket cover and merc did put out a service bulletin on it but i cant remember when that was. You may also want to check the water pump on the engine and verify flow.
