Shooting Gas from Primer System

Need your help...picked up a used boat w/a '93 40HP evinrude. Here's my issue, boat ran fine the first few times we went out, now @ full throttle boat just cuts off & dies. It will restart & run at 1/2 throttle for a while, then cut back off. I removed the engine cover & noticed, while trying to restart, gas shoots out of the primer system (i.e., the valve stem w/the red knob for manual choke)

Any ideas on what's wrong? Thanks.

That red valve can crack, there is an O-Ring at the end of the red valve thats what seals it. You can replace both cheapy, you have to take the 4 small screws off to get the red valve out. Could also be the little black plastic part the valve sits in that is broken but I doubt it. Start with that cause you dont want gas all over the place and leaking into the water anyway even if its not the main problem with the engine. One of those parts I mentioned is broken its the reason for the gas leak.

Goodluck :)

it is loosing fuel pressure all the time it is leaking. could be part of the problem. have you check spark and compression. i have owned the same motor, it is near bullet proof, if the carbs are kept clean, and de-carbed periodically.

it is also a very serious FIRE HAZARD.

Re: Shooting Gas from Primer System

If the primer system is leaking gas when you are running, then it definitely could cause the problem you are having. Replace the valve stem, o-ring gasket and then see what happens. You definitely need to fix this since it is both a fire hazard and environmental hazard. If the primer solenoid is only leaking gas when you are pushing in the key to prime, then you likely have a problem somewhere else. Make sure you have the red valve turned in the correct position (pointing over the black primer solenoid). Pointing the red valve away from the solenoid is for emergency starting when you are using a rope pull cord to start the motor.

Thanks, I did not see the leak until I got it home and then it was only when I push the key in. So the red tab should point to the right?

repair kit. http://www.iboats.com/Service_Valve...****.045875141--view_id.485850--viewcart.long

Primer Solenoid
the primer replaced the old choke butterflies in the carborators, pushing in the key activates it, like the old choke plates, but injects fuel directly into the intake.
The red handle is used when your battery is dead, and you have to rope start. You move the handle 180 degrees.
Normal operating position is with the handle back over the body of the solenoid, like in the picture below.

thank you , thank you, thank you This thread has been extremely helpful in filling in the gaps left out of my service manual.

Question? If the lever is left pointing out, will it flood the motor and cause it to stall at idle?

Re: Shooting Gas from Primer System

Yes, if you point the red handle away from the solenoid, the system is in manual mode and will constantly get a primer shot of fuel when the motor begins to runs. This is okay when the motor is cold. But once it warms up, the motor will get too much fuel and could stall at idle. The normal position of the red handle is directly over the solenoid.
