Shoe's 83' 25HP short shaft rebuild?

Hey guys,

I picked this up on a trade. So it is basically a free "something to do" toy that will cost money over time. Im not that good with motors but I research a lot and I am up to trying to get this thing running over time. No hurry on my end. The add on CL said runs great, which I knew wasnt the case once I saw the spider webs under the cowl. I asked when the last time the guy ran it and he stumbled to the answer 3 months ago. I know there is some work to be done and I am not against a complete tear down.

So its the electric start model with no starter and the foot wasnt even bolted on all the way when I got it. There isnt a pull rope even the piece for one? ontop of the flywheel?

I know about the secret file and will be reading that a lot but here is the first question....

Should I locate a starter for it or go with the pull rope assembly when I am ready to start firing this thing up?

Also, I know the engine can be run without the foot on, But can I remove it completly and bolt it to a board or something for troubleshooting?

I have the patience for this and it may take me several months or more but this kind of thing is fun to me. It something isnt repairable down the road it will be sold as a parts motor or tucked in the corner of the garage as one of those things I just cant sell.

I wouldn't mess around with it trying to get it to run. Save for parts.

I think you all missed the part that its a fun project. I respect your opinions because im here for your advice and from those who have the knowledge, I am aware that its not a steal on a motor that only needs the "carbs cleaned". Yes, most would put it in the parts bin, But its not siezed. And maybe? With a lil work, luck, money, karma I can get get it running.

Most of those came as either electric or manual not both. The good news is if you have the electric starter bracket that and the flywheel,they are worth something. Tighten all the bolts up and try to get it to fire up before anything if you are lucky it will be cosmetic more than anything. Then a compression test may need to pull it with a rope I wouldn't put any money in it until I know those things.

thanks for the info, I dont have the bracket, ill have to start searching for one. Compression test shouldnt be too hard if I can use a rope for that. Ill look more into doing that too.

Don't bother trying to find the starter bracket if everything is good just find the recoil for it. The bracket that is on there controls the high speed timing if you change it you have to re-time it. And they are pretty pricey.

Well I just picked up a new to me 40 hp mercand ordered a tiller on ebay for it. So this build is going to be on hold for awhile. I appreciate the info still and will be keeping an eye out for the parts.
