I need to ship a Honda 2HP outboard motor from vancouver to virginia..
What prreparation should I take with the motor, so not to damage the motor during shippping..
Is UPS the best way to ship? Anyone know of any other shipping methods that would be safe frr the motor?

Re: Shipping an outboard

might wanna check, I don't think ups will ship if they know what it is. Something about regulations b/c of oil and gas in engine; hazardous?? I think they get around it someway. Just so you know you know, I would call and see who will ship it, unless you think you can disguise it well.

I think I heard someone on here talking about shipping on a crate in american freightways or something. Maybe check that. Good luck

If it meets UPS' weight and size limits they are fine BUT INSURE IT FOR REPLACEMENT COST and make sure when it is shipped back to you that the same insurance is applied.

I lost a v-6 powerhead because UPS dropped it and the shipper failed to put enough insurance on it. Messy situation that I learned from.

Bob

Re: Shipping an outboard

Kev is right, Musictrek. My local UPS Shpper told me that DOT classifies used outboards as hazmat, because they have had petro-products in them. I was shipping a Johnny 2 to IL. I took it partially apart, washed everthing in the dishwasher and labeled it "Parts". Then they took it.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Hi UPS wow what a horror story with them ......I wouldn't ship a bag of rocks with them.just my opinion and a good one.i had shipped some parts to the US last year and they lost them ha go figure eh!to the tune of 4,000 dollars. The driver failed to fill in the insurance block and I wasn't home but my wife was and they more a less said your beat.UPS has huge wharehouses in the US for lost packages and there past history is not good and in talking to them many times did not get anywhere.Go with purolator a little more money but while worth it.sometimes cheaper is definatly not better!

Re: Shipping an outboard

Recently shipped a V4 power head (weight with container was 193 lbs) from Md to Ok for repair. Regular UPS would not take it because of weight. UPS does have a special overweight catagory but I was told that I would have to have the motor cleaned inside and out to remove any oil, grease, or hazardous material, and that I would have to have it cleaned at a certified location. I shipped the motor via Yellow Freight for just a little more than UPS would have charged with a lot less hassle.

Is that the motor on ebay for sale? What did you get for her. If it does not work out I would be interested.
