I am about to buy a boat that is located in Ontario and I live in Saskatchewan. Shipping it seems the smart thing to do but I'm not sure of the cost.
I was quoted $5000 or $3500 if I'm willing to wait a bit.
The distance is about 2600km or 1600 miles. The boat and trailer are 28ft long.
Too much?

If you could find a truck doing an empty backhaul you might be able to save some money.
I believe there are services on the web for that.

where in ont bud?....that is just one province over....

a quick trip and your back.....less than 1600 any way.

it cost us a grand to go from vancouver island to kelowna with a 30 footer......but that is a ferry ride...(very expensive ferrie ride)

do you have a tow vehicle?

if you are in the queen city.....just duck down below the boarder and drive state side till you hit the great lakes.....gas is much cheaper

The organization I work for has a 3pl or 3rd party logistics team that could help you get a quote. I do international sourcing and we handle quite a few shipments in and out of Canada, so we have a lot of carriers to choose from. Our website is www.allynintl.com. You can call up someone in the 3pl department and they should be able to help you.

Thanks for the tips. The distance is 1600 miles one way though and I have to drive there and get the boat.
I have a 1 ton Superduty that's up to the task of getting the boat but the fuel economy isn't the best. I figure I would burn $1400 worth of fuel at $5.60 a gallon in Canada. And at least a 4 day road trip.
I've also seen the uship adds but I don't yet know the exact dimensions of the Starcraft 221.

We moved across Canada last year. we had a couple of vehicles to ship since we couldn't drive all of them. We used LeBlanc trucking out of Okotoks,AB. Good rates and they take awesome care of the load. Inside a covered trailer the whole way.

If shipped by rail it may be hit or miss. the way it was described to us by a friend was this way. The boat is put in container then sent to Toronto. There it may sit until space is opened up on a train headed west. Then it may make it to Winnipeg where it gets off loaded until there is room on another train to Regina. then you have to find a way to get form Regina to where you live.

Just my $.02

I'm not sure what you're buying, but since you're buying long distance anyway, have you considered buying in the states? The Minneapolis or northern MN area in general might be closer and also have better pricing. I bought a used I/O from north of Minnie a couple summer ago, and a travel trailer also from there this spring. The RIV import thing for a trailer is not bad in my experience. Pricing is about 60% of what things are around here... and the dollar is decent now. With the economy and time of year, there are deals out there. Just some food for thought.

A buddy of mine bought a 2006 23' searay BR in Ottawa last summer. Took a friend and did a pretty much continuous drive there and back to pick it up. ~ 3 days return. A bit of a pain, but he got to water test the boat etc, which made him feel better about the buy.

The boat is a Starcraft Islander 221 with a tandem trailer. I don't think it would fit into a container.
I am searching tonight for a better deal. I'd rather buy in Canada but I did search the northern U.S and I didn't find anything.

Ball park $3 a mile is close to where it is for a 27 to 30ft, for an outfit that knows what they're doing. Sometimes they will be less if you have time, or they are slow.

Re: Shipping a new boat cross country (Canada)

I am going to try uship for some quotes. I have read some nightmares about being scammed and boats being damaged but I think with some research on the company I could minimize the risk.
I would rather have the trailer and boat shipped on a flat deck to keep the wear and tear of a cross country trip off the boat and trailer. I hate stone chips and dents!
Any thoughts about trailered vs tow away shipping?
Any concerns with the smaller tow away operations using 3/4 and 1 ton trucks? I see these trucks all the time pulling rv's and boats but I have no idea what kind of distance they are travelling.

+1 for shipping by rail. I sold an aircraft last March and the new owners loaded it in a container and shipped it from southern ontario to Vancouver BC and it only cost them $3000.00. Total time from the container leaving the airport to arrival in BC was 4 days.

On edit: Just reread this thread, the boat your looking at is a sister to my sylvan islander 22. Depending on the trailer it sits on, it should fit inside a container. My Islander is less than 8ft. high on the trailer and under 8ft wide.

This is a pretty popular boat in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, but I sympathize with your transport problem. There's a lot of not much between you and anywhere where you're likely to find these boats. My brother-in-law lives up in Saskatoon, so I've been up your way a few times.

I'd say get a rail quote and see if that cuts the cost down, otherwise pick your road carrier and bite the bullet. Given the wear and tear + the $ involved in driving that far, I think you are right to have it shipped and then it's somebody else's problem.

I'm in MN and I looked at buying a boat in Florida and driving down. Between the fuel costs both ways and the hassle factor + the time, there was no savings in it. Unless the current owner has flawless maintainance logs that show when the bearings on the trailer have last been overhauled, now way would I go on that long of a trip without redoing them first. That's a long day project IF things go well.

One thing I WOULD ABSOLUTELY DO is contact your insurance company and make absolutely sure that you are covered even when the boat is in transport by a third party including coverage for theft. Of course the transport company should pay for damages, but you IMO you can never be too careful and having a backup insurance that will cover any losses would make me sleep better.

Good luck.

That is great advice... I would be very very careful with Uship....just about anybody with a car or truck can bid on jobs. If you do use someone make sure you check out their insurance....there are legit haulers and some not so legit that dont have proper insurance.

Good luck

Re: Shipping a new boat cross country (Canada)

I just used U-Ship to have a 21 foot Sport Craft shipped to Wisconsin from Florida (boat heaven) I used a company named Mach One. I would recommend using someone off of there that is licensed and bonded. If they have a lot of good references on the site...all the better. Just make sure they know the weight and size of your boat and the total for shipment. If they do this for a living you will know. Do not use a fly by night company with no reviews..you'll be sorry. One thing I think is common for these types of deliveries is delays...they will occur. In a perfect world it will be on time. Just make sure to factor in delays, especially if you're planning a trip (like I was) Also, I think there is little wear and tear on a trailer, just make sure they use bearing buddies on all wheels. Also ask if they have some sort of rock protector on the back of their vehicle to protect your hull. Just a few things to think about...let us know how it goes. Good luck!

See you on the lake

Re: Shipping a new boat cross country (Canada)

In July I purchased a boat (21 ft. Boston Whaler) in Idaho and towed it back to Vancouver, BC. I drove a total (there and back) of 3200 km and it cost me $455 for diesel and $250 for 3 nights accommodation. I was a little concerned about the trailer (took along three spare tires, extra bearings and a spare hub) but had no problems on the road or at the border and my wife and I quite enjoyed the trip. As others have said, make sure that you have the proper insurance coverage for both the trailer and the boat, regardless whether you towed it back or you use a towing service.

Re: Shipping a new boat cross country (Canada)

I ended up driving the nearly 6000km with my son on the long weekend. We had a good trip and camped out in the back of the SD for a few nights. The boy figured he was going to get killed while sleeping in the back of the truck while going through America on the way there. By the time we reached the north shore of lake Superior he could sleep anywhere.
We went to Niagra Falls and did some tourist things. The freeways through Chicago and Toronto are amazing and completely clogged with traffic. I could never live there.
Total cost was under $1200.
This pic says it all.
